Trailblazing for MS: A Journey to Make A Difference
Hey there! My name is Jennifer, and as one of the nearly 1 million people in the US living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), I’m on a mission. This debilitating autoimmune disease affects the central nervous system- brain, spinal cord, optic nerve- and can wreak havoc on our lives. That’s why I founded Fearsome and why, in 2023, I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (AT) to raise funds and awareness for MS. And that’s why this year I’m trekking the Continental Divide Trail – 3,100 miles from Canada to Mexico – to raise $50,000 for MS support.
Fearsome is more than a nonprofit; we are a community that celebrates the indomitable spirit within everyone. We believe in the restorative power of nature and passionately embrace the belief that each of us can deal with whatever challenges life throws at us because all of us are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Empowering MS warriors to stay mobile, independent, and fearsome.
We do this by providing dedicated support in areas that include accessibility, exercise, mobility aids, service dogs, and adaptive driving modifications so they can navigate their path with resilience, dignity, and an unwavering belief in their own fearsome potential.
Your help matters! Donate. Follow and share the journey. You can also dedicate a Hike in Honor of someone with MS and share their story of resilience. And wherever you are, whatever you’re facing, remember, you are not alone. You are Fearsome.
On June 20, I began hiking the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail to raise awareness and $50,000 in support of people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Every dollar raised helps others with MS stay mobile, active, and connected to nature.
10 Fun Facts About the Continental Divide Trail (CDT)
The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) is one of the most challenging and breathtaking long-distance hikes in the world. Here are 10 fascinating facts about this incredible trail:
1. It’s the highest of the Triple Crown trails.
The CDT is widely considered the most rugged and highest-elevation trail of America’s Triple Crown, alongside the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail.
2. It stretches nearly 3,100 miles.
The exact distance changes with reroutes, fire closures, erosion, and alternate routes. Most thru-hikers end up walking even farther than the official mileage.
3. It follows the Continental Divide.
The trail traces the spine of the Rocky Mountains, where every drop of rain flows either toward the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of Mexico.
4. It crosses five incredible states.
- New Mexico
- Colorado
- Wyoming
- Idaho
- Montana
Along the way, hikers experience deserts, alpine tundra, dense forests, volcanic landscapes, wide-open prairies, and towering mountain peaks.
5. No two hikes are exactly alike.
Unlike some long-distance trails, the CDT offers numerous accepted alternate routes. Many hikers customize their journey based on weather, scenery, trail conditions, or resupply stops.
6. Grizzly bears are part of the adventure.
Northern sections through Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks are prime grizzly habitat, making bear awareness and proper food storage essential every day.
7. Wyoming’s wind is unforgettable.
The Great Divide Basin is famous for its endless exposure, strong winds, long water carries, and stretches where hikers may walk more than 20 miles without shade.
8. You can stand between two major watersheds.
Along the Continental Divide, rain falling just a few feet apart can eventually end up in completely different oceans.
9. Snow can fall any month of the year.
Even during the middle of summer, hikers in Colorado and Montana can wake up to fresh snow at higher elevations.
10. It was the last Triple Crown trail to become official.
The Continental Divide Trail was designated a National Scenic Trail in 1978. Even then, many sections remained unfinished or followed roads until well into the 2000s.
Bonus Fact:
Many hikers say the CDT feels less like following a trail and more like navigating a true wilderness expedition. Its unpredictability is exactly what makes it one of the most rewarding adventures on Earth.nd appeal.
